A blueprint for a successful integration of a tech acquisition.

I’ve been through many acquisitions in different roles, both on the buyer and on the seller side. Common for all have been that the acquisitions have been about acquiring talent as well as great products and technology. I have been at a loss over why the acquiring company seems to forget about the people and/or the product and technology strategy. Even Cisco Systems, the giant of acquisition-based strategy, has deep gaps in its integration execution.

But first, let me share some of my experiences with you, so you understand where…

The ability to regulate your emotions in a way that is socially accepted and appropriate will always give you the upper hand in complex situations, both in business and in your personal life. Master this ability, and you are better able to choose the appropriate actions and move things towards a good outcome. Even better, you avoid higher emotions and conflict, and people around you will also feel good. Rep. Ted Yoyo was not able to regulate his emotions both on the stairs of Congress and the days after. …

For many years I have used a very simple model to explore personal development, both for myself and for my engineers. The foundation is the core belief I have: Great products and quality software are made by people having fun.

The above diagram shows the entire model. The whole idea is to look at what you do on a daily basis and identify the things you truly enjoy and have fun doing and what you think you are really good at. Where these two have an overlap with what your organisation values (i.e. your work generates money or value for…

Much is written about how to innovate in tech. Still, it boils down to the simple ability of individuals to focus on and prioritise the right things on a day to day basis, and that other people in other functions prioritise not only the same right things but also at the SAME TIME! This is where most organisations fail.

In Are You Lost in All the Priorities, I wrote about a methodology (slicing, pacing, and themed releases) to execute quickly on a set of super-high priorities across the organisation. I focused on how a young and immature organisation does not…

Before junior software developers can start advancing their career, there are some fundamental skills they need to have in place. This seems to be sort of magic for most, so I share here a way of thinking about developing yourself based on the expectations I have to my teams. By understanding the expectations we have to the more senior engineers in five key areas, as well as what the fundamentals are, you get a framework for how to develop your career.

Overall, most universities do a pretty good job at educating software developers and give them a good, basic skill…

As software product organisations grow, they can become the victims of their own sales success. Many high-priority customers and features put pressure on the engineering organisation to deliver, but even when using all the traditional ways to prioritise and optimise execution, you feel progress is slow and the overall “delightfulness” of your product is not what it should be.

The root cause is simple: as you grow in people and priorities, you have lost that focus you had naturally when the company was a small startup, but the commonly understood criteria for prioritisation and the execution capabilities of a more…

So, you managed to pull it through. You found your product-market fit (or at least partially), got customers to pay, and secured your funding to expand. Your tight-knit team where everybody knows what everybody is doing will now double and triple in size as you add more people to the team to support your growth. Congratulations. Make sure you take time to celebrate because you are about to embark on a new and equally challenging journey.

The people you hired for the first phase were most likely generalists who thrive when things are unclear and problems just need to be…

When I open-sourced my work in July 2019 as a result of an investigation into the state of the Flutter tools and eco-system for production-quality mobile apps, I also decided to write an article about it and share it on Medium. I had not expected the overwhelming response and, as of today, the nearly 7,000 reads, 63 stars, and 22 forks. It must have filled a gap in people’s desire to learn more about Flutter.

Update Mar 6, 2020: The first_app is now available in Google Play store and as an iOS beta!

I typically tinker more over holidays, so…

Your engineering mangers can either be the heroes of your organisation or just plain administrators. What do you have? Are you hunting for the perfect engineering managers or do you believe they don’t exist?

In my last post, I introduced a practical approach to engineering leadership and the skills required in any engineering organisation. However, I’m sure people have many new questions on the practical side of how this works in practice and especially when it comes to the engineering manager role.

The key insight I tried to convey was that all engineering organisations are built around four distinctly different…

In my previous post on the new engineering leadership skills needed in a devops world, I called for a more systematic approach to developing leadership capabilities in engineering. But I gave no answers. In this post, I’ll share my practical approach to developing leadership capabilities in an engineering organisation.

Update: Also read the post on The Hunt for the Perfect Engineering Manager that builds on the framework in this post. If you want a practical approach to managing your career as a developer, read my latest post on software development skills and development.

When developing great software, there are some…
